📚 APA 7th, MLA 9th, Chicago 17th

Citation Generator

Generate a properly formatted citation for a website, book, or journal article — formats verified against the actual style guides (Purdue OWL, apastyle.apa.org), not guessed. Nothing sent anywhere; build your reference list as you go.

How it works

Author names are parsed as "Last, First" per line and reformatted per style — APA converts first names to initials (e.g. "Price, D."), while MLA and Chicago spell out the first author's full name — with the joining punctuation (commas, ampersands, "et al.") and field order differing by style and by source type (website, book, or journal article each use their own template). Citations you add to the reference list are saved to your browser's localStorage and displayed sorted alphabetically, matching how a real reference page is ordered.

FAQ

Does the reference list save across visits?
Yes — added citations are stored in your browser's localStorage under a single key, so they persist after closing the tab, but they're local to that browser and won't sync to another device.
Why does MLA switch to "et al." after two authors but APA doesn't?
Because that's what each style guide actually specifies — MLA abbreviates three or more authors down to the first author plus "et al.", while this generator's APA formatting spells out every author's initials and joins them with commas and an ampersand, matching APA 7th's rule of listing up to 20 authors before truncating.
