FIRE calculator
Your FIRE number: how much invested wealth covers your spending forever, using a safe withdrawal rate.
—FIRE number
—years to reach it
Based on the "4% rule" by default: withdrawing 4% of your portfolio annually is designed to last indefinitely, historically. Not financial advice.
How it works
Your FIRE number is your annual spending divided by the safe withdrawal rate. Years to reach it is simulated month by month: your current investments grow at the monthly-compounded expected return and add your monthly contribution, repeating until the balance meets your FIRE number or 1,200 months (100 years) pass.
FAQ
- Why is the default withdrawal rate 4%?
- It comes from research on historical U.S. stock/bond portfolios (often called the "4% rule" or Trinity study), which found that withdrawing 4% of an initial portfolio, adjusted for inflation each year, rarely ran out of money over a 30-year retirement — it's a widely used rule of thumb, not a guarantee.
- What does it mean if the years field shows "Never at this rate"?
- The calculator gives up after simulating 1,200 months (100 years) without your balance reaching your FIRE number — meaning your current contributions and growth rate aren't enough to get there in a realistic timeframe.
