💼 what to actually charge per hour
Freelance Hourly Rate Calculator
Work backward from the income you want to the hourly rate you need to charge, accounting for unpaid time off and non-billable overhead. Nothing leaves your browser.
How it works
Working hours per year (52 minus weeks off, times hours per week) are multiplied by your billable percentage to get billable hours. Your desired income plus annual expenses is divided by those billable hours to get the hourly rate you'd need to charge; the day rate is that hourly rate times hours-per-week divided by 5.
FAQ
- Why include a "billable percentage" instead of just hours worked?
- Because not all working hours are billable — time spent on admin, marketing, and unpaid client communication doesn't generate revenue, so the calculator raises your effective hourly rate to cover the hours you can't invoice for.
- How is the day rate calculated?
- It's your hourly rate multiplied by (working hours per week ÷ 5) — it always assumes a 5-day work week for this conversion, regardless of what you entered as your working hours per week.
