How it works
Each person's net balance is what they paid minus their equal share of every expense they're included in. A greedy debt-simplification algorithm then repeatedly matches the largest creditor with the largest debtor until every balance hits zero — producing the minimum number of payments needed to settle up, not a record of who owes whom for which specific expense.

Why doesn't the settle-up list match exactly who paid for what?
The greedy debt-simplification algorithm only cares about each person's net balance, not the original transaction history — it repeatedly pairs the biggest creditor with the biggest debtor to minimize the total number of payments, which usually means someone pays a person they never technically owed money to directly.
What happens if I edit the People list after adding expenses?
Each expense stores who paid and who it's split among by list position, not by name — inserting or removing a person in the middle of the comma-separated list shifts everyone after them, which can silently reassign an expense to a different person than intended.
