Markup & margin calculator

Enter your cost and either a markup % or the selling price — everything else fills in.

—selling price
—profit
—margin %

Markup % is profit as a percentage of cost. Margin % is profit as a percentage of the selling price — they're different numbers for the same sale.

How it works

Editing markup % computes selling price as cost times (1 + markup/100), while editing selling price directly back-computes markup as (price − cost) / cost — the calculator tracks whichever field you touched last and always keeps that one as the source of truth, recalculating the other two outputs (profit and margin) from whichever pair was just entered.

FAQ

Why are markup % and margin % different numbers for the same sale?
Markup is profit as a percentage of cost, while margin is profit as a percentage of the selling price — since the selling price is always larger than the cost when there's a profit, margin % is always lower than markup % for the same sale (e.g. a 100% markup on a $50 cost gives a $100 price, which is only a 50% margin).
Which field wins if I edit both markup and selling price?
Whichever one you typed into most recently — the calculator remembers your last-edited field and treats it as the input, recalculating the other from cost, so editing markup after typing a price overwrites the price you'd entered.
