Morse code translator

Text to Morse and back. Play it as audio beeps if you like.

How it works

Text is converted using a lookup table for A-Z and 0-9; letters within a word are separated by a single space and words by " / ", and Morse-to-text does the reverse by splitting on those same separators. Playing the audio recreates the encoding as a sequence of tones with the Web Audio API at 600Hz, where a dash lasts three times as long as a dot and the gaps between letters and words are scaled proportionally.

FAQ

What happens if I type punctuation or accented characters?
They're dropped - this translator's lookup table only covers A-Z and 0-9, matching the original International Morse Code chart, so anything else becomes a blank in the output.
Why do I need to click Play instead of it just playing automatically?
Browsers block audio from starting until you've interacted with the page, so the click both creates the AudioContext and starts the beep sequence at the same time.
