How it works

Scores use the standard Flesch Reading Ease and Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level formulas, which combine average sentence length (words ÷ sentences) with average syllables per word. Syllables are estimated with a regex heuristic — stripping a trailing silent e/ed/es and counting groups of vowels — since JavaScript has no built-in syllable counter and a fully accurate one would need a pronunciation dictionary.

FAQ

Why might the syllable count be wrong for some words?
The heuristic just counts vowel groups after trimming common silent endings, so irregular words and acronyms can be miscounted — the same limitation most quick readability tools share, since it's an estimate rather than a dictionary lookup.
What counts as a sentence boundary for this checker?
Any run of periods, exclamation points, or question marks — so an ellipsis like "..." still counts as just one sentence break, not three.
