How it works
Tax is computed by walking the actual 2025 IRS bracket table (verified against irs.gov, not assumed) bracket by bracket, taxing only the portion of your taxable income that falls within each bracket's range — the opposite of the common misconception that your whole income gets taxed at your top bracket's rate. Both filing statuses use the actual 2025 standard deduction figures when that option is selected.
FAQ
Why is my effective tax rate so much lower than my tax bracket?
Your marginal bracket, say 22%, only applies to the slice of income inside that bracket — every dollar below it is still taxed at the lower brackets' rates, which is exactly why the effective rate shown is always lower than the marginal rate.
Does this include state tax, FICA, or tax credits?
No — it's federal income tax only, using the actual 2025 IRS brackets. It doesn't include state or local tax, Social Security/Medicare (FICA) tax, self-employment tax, or any credits, so it isn't a substitute for an actual filing.
