Add tax to a price, or work backward from a tax-inclusive total.
Add tax to price
Remove tax from total
—price before tax
—tax amount
—total with tax
How it works
In "add tax" mode the tax is simply the price times the rate, added on top; in "remove tax" mode the entered figure is treated as the tax-inclusive total and divided by (1 + rate) to recover the pre-tax price, since the rate was originally applied to that smaller number, not the total itself.
FAQ
Why isn't removing tax from a total just subtracting the tax rate percentage?
Because the tax rate applies to the pre-tax price, not the tax-inclusive total — to reverse it correctly the calculator divides the total by (1 + rate) to find the original price, rather than just subtracting rate% of the total.
Are the preset rates like UK VAT or NYC sales tax kept up to date automatically?
No — they're fixed reference values in the page for convenience; tax rates change by jurisdiction and over time, so confirm the current rate for your specific case rather than relying solely on a preset.
