How it works

The first time you use it, the browser downloads MODNet (an Apache-2.0 licensed portrait/object matting model, roughly 7MB) and runs it entirely on your device via ONNX. The model outputs a single-channel mask predicting which pixels are foreground, which is resized back up to the source image's full resolution and copied directly into the output canvas's alpha channel to produce a transparent PNG.

FAQ

Why does the background removal sometimes look rough around fine details like hair?
MODNet's mask is generated at a lower internal resolution and then resized back up to match the original image, so very fine or wispy edges can lose precision in that upscale.
Does it work without an internet connection?
Only after the first use — the ~7MB model has to download once, but after that it's cached by the browser and processing runs fully offline.
