How it works
Each monster type's count ร XP is summed into a base XP total, then multiplied by a factor from the DMG's monster-count table (1ร for a single monster up to 4ร for 15 or more) โ that factor shifts one bracket up if the party has fewer than 3 members, or one bracket down if it has more than 5, before the adjusted XP is compared against the party's level-and-size-scaled Easy/Medium/Hard/Deadly thresholds.
FAQ
Why does adding more players change the monster multiplier, not just the XP threshold?
That's the DMG's action-economy rule: the base multiplier from the monster-count table shifts one bracket higher for parties smaller than 3, and one bracket lower for parties larger than 5, since a group of monsters is disproportionately more dangerous against fewer actions per round.
Does this account for terrain, magic items, or legendary actions?
No โ it only reproduces the DMG's XP-threshold and multiplier math from the count and XP value you enter per monster type. The Dungeon Master's Guide itself notes those other factors can swing an encounter's real difficulty well beyond what the numbers alone predict.
