How it works
Each photo is decoded into an in-memory image, drawn pixel-for-pixel onto a blank canvas, and re-exported as a new file from that canvas — since EXIF metadata lives in the original file's header rather than in the pixel data, the redraw naturally produces a clean copy with no GPS, camera, or timestamp data attached.

How does redrawing an image remove EXIF data?
Each photo is loaded into an <img>, drawn onto a blank <canvas>, and re-exported from that canvas as a new file. EXIF metadata (GPS coordinates, camera model, timestamps) lives in the original file's header, not in the pixel data the canvas copies, so the re-exported image simply never has it.
Why does it need a separate library just for iPhone photos?
iPhones save photos in HEIC format by default, which browsers can't decode into a canvas natively. The heic2any library converts HEIC to JPEG first, entirely on your device, so the same redraw-and-export process can strip its metadata too.
