Tile calculator
Room area + tile size + wastage → tiles and boxes needed.
—floor area
—tiles needed
—boxes needed
How it works
Floor area divided by the area of one tile gives the raw tile count, then the wastage allowance is added on top and the result rounded up to a whole tile — you can't buy or cut a fraction of one. If you enter how many tiles come in a box, that count is divided by tiles-per-box and rounded up again, since suppliers sell full boxes only.
FAQ
- Does this account for grout lines?
- No — grout lines are thin enough relative to most tile sizes that they're folded into the wastage allowance rather than calculated separately. For very large grout gaps or very small tiles, increase the wastage percentage to compensate.
- Why round up to whole tiles and boxes?
- You can't buy or cut a fraction of a tile for the count that matters, and most suppliers only sell full boxes — rounding up on both avoids coming up short mid-job.
