How it works

The tool loads Swin2SR, a transformer-based super-resolution model (~18MB), and runs it fully on-device to produce a genuine 2× resolution increase — not a resize, but the model reconstructing plausible new pixel detail based on patterns it learned from training images. That's why it's slower than a normal image resize and why it works best on smaller source images.

Why does the tool suggest starting with a small image (under ~500px)?

The model reconstructs detail based on patches of the source image, and processing time and memory use grow substantially with resolution — a large source image can make the browser slow or run out of memory.

Is this different from just resizing the image bigger in an editor?

Yes — a normal resize just interpolates between existing pixels, while Swin2SR was trained to infer plausible texture and edge detail that wasn't in the original pixels at all.
